Not unlike other hugely popular sports in North America, hockey is a much-loved game that offers too many talented players to count. That makes compiling a definitive list of the 10 greatest the sport has ever seen something akin to impossible. So while we play with claims of having figured out who the best the sport has ever brought forth include, we really only make a humble attempt, offering up 10 serious suggestions, but sure that we could continue to argue this point for a very long time to come. And just when we think we’ve found the answer, no doubt some dynamo of a new talent will come along. Nevertheless, here are 10 of the greatest in hockey history who we think must be near tops. Many expert references and cross-sections of similar lists seem to agree.
10 Of Hockey’s Historically Great Players
Wayne Gretzky – virtually untouchable multiple record holder. Enough said.
Ray Bourque – Ray Borque’s hockey achievements are almost too numerous to mention; but then, for hockey fans, you usually don’t need to.
Mark Messier – some say he was overshadowed by his friend and teammate Wayne Gretzky, but he still manages to make the list of the top 10, most notably for his leadership abilities.
Bobby Orr – can you have a top 10 greatest hockey players list and not include the giant name of Bobby Orr?? Said to have owned the ice and the puck, but unfortunately cut-short in his playing career, but unarguably one of the best there ever has been.
Mario Lemieux – most would consider him the most physically talented hockey player. Only his position on the list of the top 10 might be in question, but certainly not his place here.
Patrick Roy – it’s easy to overlook the talent of the goaltender. Unless he’s letting it all past, which Patrick Roy certainly did not do. Integral to the game, integral to the list.
Bobby Hull – known by the nickname dubbed him, the Golden Jet, Bobby Hull is one who makes the list of the best in the game more often than not, and unbeknownst at the time had even more in store for a hockey legacy to come.
Sergei Federov – a two-way player and multiple trophy winner who dominated much of the ice in the 1990’s.
Brett Hull – Hull is a name fast becoming synonymous with hockey history it seems, although people can’t seem to decide if it is the father or the son who impacted the game the most. Without question, both Brett and his Dad, the aforementioned Bobby, have left their marks in the ice. The son is criticized as being too one-dimensional in his play (being largely a shooter), but his scoring record, 131 above his old man’s, makes it tough to argue against him.
Elmer Lach – how about a blast from the past to round out the list? This mid-forties player led the league in points and was named MVP in the year many think belonged to another historic favorite, Maurice Richard.
